Year 2

    Year 2 Whole Year Curriculum

Welcome back to the final term in Key Stage 1. Year 2 are really excited about what we are going to be learning about this term and we have already seen our tadpoles change into froglets!

As we’re hoping that the weather will warm up and we will be able to do lots of outdoor learning. Please make sure that your child brings a hat and sun cream when the sun begins to shine. They will also need a water bottle in school so that they have access to fresh water throughout the day.

In the next few weeks, year 2 will do their SATs tests. It will be kept low key and the children will not be told when they will be doing them. We will balance the testing with interesting science and topic activities. The children are not assessed on the tests alone but on the teacher assessment that I have collected over the year. Please feel free to call in or ring if you have any questions about them. We’ll let you know how your child has done when we send the reports at the end of the year.

Now your children are becoming good readers, it is really important to keep encouraging them to read at home. At St Thomas’ we want our children to get a love of reading that take them into adulthood. Please pop in and ask if you would like some ideas of good books for your child to read.

What we are learning this term:

We are learning all about owls and we will be reading ‘The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson. We will write our own stories, information texts and letters about them.

We will be focusing on applying out maths to problems in everyday life, including weighing and measuring. We will begin to use number in their hundreds and describe the properties of different 2-D and 3-D shapes.

Our topic this term is ‘Go Wild!’ We will be learning about lots of different plants and animals and thinking about how they are suited to the habitat in which they live. We will explore the minibeasts around our school. We will also look at growing plants and what the best growing conditions are.

We will be learning about some of the first explorers and the lands that they discovered as well as thinking about the first aeroplane flights. We will also do a mini topic on Australia. We will need to name the continents, oceans and seas around the British Isles and the World.

We will be learning and creation and the bible.

We will be using different software to record and make videos.

We will learn about keeping safe whilst on the internet and how to search for information whilst still keeping safe.

The focus this term will be athletics and invasion games with a focus on playing fair in team games.

    Art and Design

We will be looking at the design features of birds and using them to make out own paper aeroplanes and model planes. We will make kites and see if we can get them to fly. We will also work on observational drawings.

Finally, during the last half term we will be spending time preparing the children for the transition into KS2. They will be taken to visit the classes and spend some of the playtimes with the older children. Children that we know will find this transition more difficult will have more time spent with them getting ready for the change.

Hopefully you’ve got an overview of what we will be doing this term. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to catch me at the end of the day or leave a message in the office and I’ll get back to you.
